Is it better to paint or stain a wood deck?
That depends on the condition of your deck and the appearance you want. Transparent and semi-transparent stains protect the wood while allowing some or all of the natural grain to remain visible. Solid-color stains and deck paints create a more uniform, opaque appearance. How often should a deck be stained or sealed in Wichita?

Do you clean or pressure-wash decks before staining them?
Proper cleaning is one of the most important parts of refinishing a deck. Dirt, mildew, loose coating, and other contaminants can prevent a new finish from penetrating or adhering properly. Depending on the condition of the wood, preparation may involve pressure washing, soft washing, scrubbing, stripping, or a combination of methods. The goal is to clean the deck without damaging or excessively raising the wood grain.
How long does a deck need to dry after pressure washing?
The deck must be thoroughly dry before stain, sealer, or paint is applied. Depending on temperature, humidity, shade, airflow, and recent rainfall, drying may require approximately 24 to 72 hours or longer. Product instructions and the actual moisture condition of the wood should determine when application begins, not an arbitrary deadline. Sherwin-Williams recommends allowing pressure-washed wood roughly 48 to 72 hours to dry in favorable conditions.
Does every deck need to be sanded before staining?
Not every deck requires the same amount of sanding. Sanding may be necessary to remove loose coatings, splinters, rough wood fibers, weathered surfaces, or uneven areas. Some decks need only limited spot sanding, while neglected or heavily coated decks may require more extensive preparation. We evaluate the surface before deciding what level of sanding is appropriate.
Can you stain over an existing stain or deck paint?
Sometimes, but only when the old finish is sound and compatible with the new product. Loose, peeling, or failing coatings must be removed, and a previously painted deck usually cannot simply be covered with a transparent stain. We examine the current coating and wood condition before recommending cleaning, sanding, stripping, repainting, or restaining.
Can an old or badly weathered deck be restored?
Many older decks can be dramatically improved if the underlying structure remains sound. Restoration may include deep cleaning, removing a failed finish, sanding rough areas, securing loose fasteners, replacing limited damaged material, and applying an appropriate protective coating. If the deck has extensive rot or structural problems, we will explain what should be repaired before cosmetic refinishing begins.
